Izan Guevara won the Austrian Moto2 Grand Prix on Sunday, scoring his second victory of the 2026 season and cutting Manuel González’s championship lead to 35.5 points.
What happened
Guevara took control of the race at the Red Bull Ring and finished 1.728 seconds ahead of Filip Salač. David Alonso completed the podium 2.945 seconds behind the winner, while championship leader Manuel González recovered to finish fourth.
Guevara entered the weekend 47.5 points behind González and gained 12 points through the Austrian result, reducing the deficit to 35.5 with seven rounds remaining.
Why it matters
The win materially tightened the Moto2 championship. González limited the damage with fourth place, but Guevara’s 25-point victory means the title contest is closer heading into the overseas portion of the calendar.
The result was also another strong demonstration of Moto2’s emphasis on rider execution. With tightly controlled technical regulations, braking, tire management, race positioning and consistency can have an outsized effect on the final result.

For Canadian motorcycle fans, Moto2 provides a clear view of the development level immediately below MotoGP. The motorcycles are purpose-built competition machines and should not be treated as equivalents to production motorcycles available through Canadian dealerships.
