Cardo Systems has used a software update to materially expand the capability of compatible PackTalk communication hardware, illustrating how powersports accessories are becoming more like software platforms than one-time hardware purchases.

Mesh Boost increases supported second-generation Dynamic Mesh Communication groups to as many as 31 riders, up from 15, and adds Public Mesh, Remote Grouping and a redesigned group-management experience. Cardo says the upgrade is delivered over the air through the Cardo Connect app for supported devices at no additional charge.

For dealers, the important part is not simply the number 31. It is the fact that a product already in a customer’s helmet can gain significant functionality after the original sale.

What Mesh Boost changes

Cardo describes three headline additions.

The first is expanded private DMC groups. Compatible units can now support up to 31 riders in one true DMC group. For organized touring groups, clubs and larger dealer rides, that changes the practical ceiling of the system.

The second is Public Mesh. Rather than creating a private group and inviting specific users, riders can enter an open DMC conversation space and communicate with compatible riders who are within range. Cardo specifically points to use cases such as rider events, training courses, dealer demo rides, charity rides and motorcycle meetups.

The third is Remote Grouping. Riders can create a DMC group before meeting in person, then share a link or QR code so others can join. That moves setup away from the parking lot and into the planning stage of the ride.

Cardo is also redesigning the Cardo Connect intercom interface around the larger groups and new workflows.

Compatibility matters more than the headline

The update is for supported second-generation DMC products rather than every Cardo communicator ever sold. Cardo’s own materials identify supported devices such as PackTalk Pro, PackTalk Edge and PackTalk Neo, with compatibility details varying by device.

The company also says legacy DMC units can participate in mixed groups with limitations. When older-generation units are included, group size and some advanced Mesh Boost functionality can be restricted.

That makes dealer education important. A customer walking into a parts department with a five-year-old communicator may hear “Cardo now supports 31 riders” and assume the capability applies to every device. Staff need to verify the exact model and firmware before making that promise.

Why this matters for Canadian dealers

This is not a country-specific motorcycle launch, so there is no Canadian MSRP or allocation problem to solve. The opportunity is after-sale engagement.

A dealership that sold PackTalk units over the last few years has a reason to contact those customers again. A short clinic showing riders how to update firmware, create a group, use Public Mesh and configure Remote Grouping can provide real value without requiring the customer to buy replacement hardware.

That is particularly relevant for Canadian riding groups that organize long-distance touring, adventure rides, snowmobile or off-road outings where communication products are often purchased in pairs or groups.

The dealer can also use the update to demonstrate newer compatible units beside older hardware. The sales conversation becomes less about “you need the newest headset” and more about whether the customer’s current equipment supports the features their group wants.

Software changes the accessory lifecycle

Traditional accessory retail is transactional: sell the helmet, communicator, GPS or heated gear, then wait until the customer needs a replacement.

Connected accessories create a different relationship. Firmware can change functionality, compatibility and user experience months or years after the original purchase. That means the dealer’s support obligation does not necessarily end at the counter.

The same trend is appearing elsewhere in powersports through app-connected vehicles, over-the-air display updates, navigation platforms and connected safety systems. Customers increasingly own products whose behaviour can change after delivery.

For dealerships, that creates an opportunity to build a recurring ownership-support process around connected products. It also creates risk if staff do not know which firmware or app version a customer needs.

Events may be the strongest retail use case

Public Mesh and larger groups are especially interesting for dealer-hosted rides.

A store running a demo day, adventure route, charity ride or owner event could create a communication plan around compatible devices. Staff could help riders update units before departure and use the event to demonstrate the difference between private groups and Public Mesh.

That gives the accessory department a role in the dealership’s community strategy rather than treating communications equipment as shelf inventory.

It also creates content opportunities. A dealer can publish a quick setup guide, a short video explaining the update or an event checklist that remains useful after the initial news cycle.

RideFirst and RideMarket perspective

For RideFirst, this is a useful ownership story because it affects products customers may already own. Editorial coverage should explain eligibility and practical use instead of presenting the update like an entirely new hardware launch.

RideMarket’s connection is indirect but meaningful. The marketplace increasingly sits inside a wider ownership ecosystem where shoppers compare not only vehicles but also the technology, accessories and dealer support that surround them.

Over time, dealerships that are strong at explaining connected accessories may have an advantage in retaining customers after the vehicle purchase.

What to watch next

The next question is how Mesh Boost performs in real-world large groups. Thirty-one riders on a specification sheet is different from 31 riders spread across changing terrain, intersections and varying device generations.

Dealers should also watch Cardo’s compatibility and release notes as supported-device details evolve. Customers should update the Cardo Connect app and device firmware before ride day rather than trying to troubleshoot in the parking lot.

The broader takeaway is bigger than one headset update: powersports accessories are increasingly software-defined. For retailers, that means product knowledge now includes what the hardware can become after it leaves the store.
