Honda has unveiled a three-model CRF1150L Africa Twin family for 2027, adding an Enduro Sports version and introducing radar assistance on the Adventure Sports. The November 3 announcement describes motorcycles for the European market. The changes reach well beyond a new badge: Honda has revised the engine, chassis, fuel layout and equipment to give the three versions more clearly defined jobs.

For Canadian adventure riders, the useful question is which version best suits the riding they actually do. The standard Africa Twin remains the mixed-surface choice, the Adventure Sports puts greater emphasis on distance and comfort, and the Enduro Sports moves toward more demanding off-road use. That separation should make the family easier to understand than a comparison based on displacement alone.

A larger twin with attention to balance

The new parallel twin displaces 1,131 cc. Honda quotes 87.5 kW at 7,500 rpm and 119 Nm at 5,700 rpm, alongside changes to compression, breathing and gear ratios. Those figures describe the announced specification; they do not establish how the motorcycle feels with luggage, a passenger or on loose ground.

The chassis work may be just as relevant as the added capacity. Honda says the redesigned frame body and swingarm together weigh 1.4 kg less than their predecessors. That is a component saving, rather than a claimed 1.4 kg reduction in the complete motorcycle. A fuel sub-tank beneath the seat is intended to lower the centre of gravity.

Moving mass lower can matter when turning around on a narrow road or controlling a loaded motorcycle at walking speed. It does not eliminate the importance of seat shape, suspension sag or where a rider places luggage. A useful showroom assessment would include lifting the bike off its stand, reaching the controls in riding boots and checking how naturally the rider can move between sitting and standing.

Three versions, three priorities

The standard Africa Twin gains an electrically adjustable windscreen, Smart Key operation and Showa electronic suspension with Honda Skyhook control. Adventure Sports adds a 24-litre tank and a 19-inch front wheel. Enduro Sports takes front-suspension specifications and styling cues from Honda's CRF450 RALLY programme.

These choices present different compromises. A touring rider may value wind protection and fuel capacity more than maximum off-road suspension performance. Someone regularly riding rougher trails may put greater weight on standing ergonomics and front-end control. Neither preference can be settled by the most dramatic launch photograph.

For longer Canadian trips, fuel capacity is only one part of planning. Consumption changes with speed, load, terrain and weather, so a larger tank should not be converted into a promised range without consumption evidence. Luggage mounting, passenger space and access to service are equally practical considerations when a route includes substantial distances between towns.

Radar assistance has a specific place

Honda SENSING RIDE is offered as an option specifically on the Adventure Sports DCT. It should not be described as standard across the Africa Twin range. Honda's separate technical announcement explains a system using front and rear radar to support functions including adaptive cruise control, Stop & Go, following-distance assistance and warnings about surrounding traffic.

The distinction between assistance and rider responsibility remains central. A following-distance function can help manage a defined traffic situation, but the rider still needs to choose an appropriate speed and gap. Warning systems also depend on their operating conditions and cannot make a motorcycle immune to poor visibility, limited traction or another road user's mistake.

DCT gives the traffic-related features a particular role because the transmission can manage gear changes during stopping and starting. Riders interested in that combination should seek an explanation of activation, cancellation and restart behaviour. Familiarity with those controls matters more than simply counting the number of functions listed on a specification sheet.

What matters for Canadian buyers

The European reveal establishes the new family and its technical direction. Canadian pricing, model combinations and delivery commitments should come from the Canadian distributor or a written dealer quotation for the actual motorcycle being ordered. An overseas equipment list should not be treated as a local purchase contract.

A good comparison will therefore start with route choice and load, then move to fit and equipment. Riders who mostly tour paved roads should assess screen coverage and passenger comfort. Those planning regular loose-surface riding should check room to move, lever access while standing and the suitability of their chosen tyres. All three versions deserve to be judged with the intended use in mind.

The 2027 Africa Twin announcement is significant because Honda has changed both the platform and the way the range is organised. More displacement attracts attention, but the lower fuel layout, distinct Enduro Sports version and carefully limited radar option explain the broader story: Honda is offering different answers to different adventure-riding needs.
